NotesGamelan is the name for instrumental orchestra music in Indonesia, as well as the name for the orchestra itself, the styles breaking down very roughly into those indigenous to the island of Java, the island of Bali, and the area of the Sunda Straits, respectively. The instruments of the gamelan are for the greater part percussion instruments, including instruments of xylophone type (mostly made of bronze), drums, and gongs. These form the foundation of the music, while the rebab, a violin-like instrument, and the suling, a flute-like instrument, will often carry the melody as a counterpoint to the melodic underpinning of the metallophones and gongs. Another melodic instrument is of course the human voice, and this features the singing of Tukinem as 'pesinden'.
