Where did the album sell for 25,000? ON feebay? What kind of copy sold on discogs for $50? was it just the jacket? or was this a lucky hit for someone?
  • Garne
The comment did say: Reissue from 1991 on Darkside Recordings, comes complete with insert! Conservatively graded more like EXCELLENT. - So this was the black cover variation of the first official repress. Not the originial...Obviously it was listed wrong.

HiSteve Giles wrote, that he made 250 p. for Swank in 1990. That was the single cover release with pasted original pictures on it.After that release came out the black cover variation (for Steve Smith) of the same stock of (org. 500) LPs. That was 220 or 225 p.Steve Giles kept the rest, gave one or the other away, gave two to his grandchildren and sold about 22 in the new gatefold variation. In my opinion, if you are ordering 500 p. from a pressing plant, you'll get up to 10 test LPs, that could explain the little variation in the story.

This release is mediocre at best middle of the road Brit blues psych influenced prog nothing extraordinary or pioneering especially if your allocating the music influences to progressive rock. I almost think the cult prices for this album is bs and a conspiracy toward the sucker record collector with a fat stack to blow. Glad I dont buy vinyl anymore or lower my standards listening to the level of this dreck!

The first letter of subjectivity should be a dollar sign especially when it comes to collecting vinyl LOL.. it's like this inevery collectables culture. It's true, one rare record one can't give away, yet others are cherished. That's just how humans are. I would still assume, if you found this album, you ineed would be happy because then you could make a few dollars offhow bad it is :)

Ahh, we obviously have an absolute music connoisseur among us who can explain the only true music taste to us. Well, long live the difference and diversity on earth.

One of the best records in the world - as a collectible value ! Will be included in the top 30 ! Although the music is not very super ! But 100.000 $ is WORTH it !!!
  • Gardagar
Best records, yet "not very super" .. do you contradict yourself like this often .. LOL ;)
  • Avarm
"Not very super"..?! On my way to Ekaterinburg! ;)Ron - Bass

If this sold for £35 then the buyer certainly got a bargain/investment... A copy of this (SIS SR 0102S) was sold to a private UK collector in 2017 for £25,000.00. Prior to that a copy was found in a Northampton record shop for a silly price and was sold on for £5000.00.https://www.facebook.com/pg/darkedges/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1339445699407772

This issue sounds magnificient, the perfect balance between price and quality.

One of THEE greatest guitar-heavy psych records in the world, this was originally released in an edition of 64 copies (12 Colour Gatefolds, 1 'Special' Colour Gatefold, 1 White Doodle On Sleeve, 12 B& W Gatefolds and 38 B&W Single Sleeves), mostly for friends, family and the odd record company. Its reputation has since blossomed into Something resembling a redwood, or perhaps and original Van Gogh. This album is the holy grail for lovers of fuzz-driven hard rock, and has been the most sought-after priavtely pressed LP on the planet.

A timeless masterpice. Not cheap, but priceless. Real art from the real artist. No more, no less.....
  • Hasirri
These are only being auctioned on ebay by Steve Giles. He puts one copy up a week and has only a few left. If you want it try there, but very expensive starting price.

both darkside 001 versions listed on discogs are the exact same pressing with different covers but not both "darkside 001",225 x copies were issued as darkside 001 in the uk with a black cover as shown in this listing , the remainder of the pressing run, circa 275 x copies were housed in the original style sleeves with glued on pics which were shipped to the usa and sold by SWANK as with the forever amber issue. the whole run was pressed up by steve giles of dark, the uk darkside edition of 225 copies was sold in the uk and the cover was printed in the uk. the vinyl of both versions is absolutely the same pressing. the black cover is actually rarer, it was issued by an early incarnation (eg darkside) of kissing spell records, the label that discovered most of the uks rarest private pressings in the eighties, and is thought to have been sold to cypriot mafiosa around 1999.
  • Vushura
It is the very same pressing. The version for Swank came first in a run of 250 copies (all with original hand pasted photos on front and back by Steve Giles). Later on the black cover version was released in a run of 225 copies. The rest remained with Steve Giles 'till the very collectable "deluxe version" sold in 2017.

contrary to popular myth an english collector owned an original before p.majors found one, but did not breathe a word about it, alas that copy had an incomplete cover missing the band info, when the american contingent decided to locate the band circa 1990, they asked a northern soul specialist and fly fisherman from shrewsbury to do the detective work, and lo, the band were actually found by him, a certain mr ian faulkner, he passed the info to majors and simultaneously to an english collector who later issued the affordable cds in the uk, fully licensed from the band, and bought over ten originals. thus the glory for finding britains most unholy grail, the cool fuzz beast that is dark, is entirely mr faulkners. detractors of the dark lp are merely jealous of owning it, the opening track is sublime, and live for today remains a fuzz guitar masterpiece. all hail ian faulkner, who brought us the darkness, the fuzz, the ultimate prog behemoth.

I paid for the entire project myself as a 19 year old only out of school for 12 months. Earning £6 per week - 30 pressings were all I could afford.Up front payments for re-orders allowed me to produce a further 30.Both runs had 2 test pressings each - so a total of 64 originals ever existed.Obviously, at the time I had no inkling of the interest that this LP would attract.I was (quite rightly, I have been told) very proud of my band and only produced the album so that I had something to look back on after we split.Despite the fact that we joked "This'll be worth a fortune someday" at the time, if anyone had told me that 44 years later an original colour gatefold would sell for £25,000 - I don't think I would have believed them! :o)Steve GilesDARK Founder Member
  • EROROHALO
So few copies were pressed because the band paid for them out of pocket, as momentos for family and friends.
  • Yahm
Who presses 60 copies of a record? That's insanely low. No wonder it's so rare
  • Iraraeal
Original editions do attract prices among collectors that are totally out of proportion to the music's rather average worth. You don't have to pay that much to hear the music tho, as it's now been reissued more than once...
  • Kigul
This isn't only about the music, but the pressing. Sometimes a RE or RM is made, but there will never be another like the original.
