Reviews:
  • GYBYXOH
The negative comments on this release are ridiculous. Sounds incredible on my system!!
  • Iriar
I disagree with many of the comments here. From the moment I put this on my turntable I was impressed by the quality and clarity. It is DMB like I'd never heard before. Because this is a higher-end pressing it's possible that it requires a better cartridge to playback without sibilance -- a complaint others have made here. With a decent playback system this album sounds outstanding.
  • The Apotheoses of Lacspor
I think the valid complaint many have is this was digitally remastered and we have a 16/44.1 version of the 24/96 cutting files - it has almost all the dynamics of the original 1994 master and should sound better overall, but the intention originally was to both master AND CUT FROM the original analogue master which would have resulted in a noticeably more dynamic version of the album. With Crash this misstep was corrected, the album was cut AAA and hopefully they'll do the same with BTCS later this year.To understand how much dynamics are lost in this mastering, have a listen to the stereo track of WWYS from the "The Videos" DVD, it's substantially more dynamic than the eventual album mastering as are the videos for I Did It and Don't Drink the Water, but sadly the trend these days is not to master for audiophiles. Perhaps some day we'll get an audiophile label release of UTTAD or they might do a 45rpm AAA cut and while the existing release sounds good, then we'll hear just what was left on the table and I expect this edition will be blown away.
  • PC-rider
It's cut pretty hot and dynamic, which is good and does indeed require good gear to hear how good it actually sounds. I never had these sibilants issues and was quite confused by some of the reviews. Glad it wasn't mastered for the lowest denominater.
  • Mr_Jeйson
My copy played nice and clean. I am a bit disappointed in the sound quality, not much (any) depth to the sound. Compared to my cd this is easier to listen to, not as sharp or edgy sounding. I am not fatigued after listening to it at a decent level. If you have the cd I don’t think this is a big enough difference to warrant the money but to each their own.
  • Impala Frozen
It's an exact repress, using the recut SIDE C which includes the correct version of Jimi Thing.
  • just one girl
vinyl2016buyer Are the records placed in a gatefold jacket? word word This release is not in a gatefold jacket, just a single pocket. I picked this up at my local today (physically, did not buy as I own the 2015 release) and was amazed that 2 discs were inside. Felt like 1 at best. Really surprised this is even 150g.
  • Brazil
Is this an exact repress of the 2014/15 edition with that strange mastering? Or does this sound any better? Thanks guys
  • Cala
Are the records placed in a gatefold jacket? word word
  • Nten
The most important part to any record is how it sounds and this DMB release sounds just awful. Too much high end sizzle and distorted sibilance on the vocals. This was originally an excellent recording when it was first released in the 90's but this abysmal remaster ssssslipped through quality control. What a shame too because the packaging is beautifully done.Saddly I suggest you pass this one up and wait for a better release.
  • Rose Of Winds
Do not buy this Issue. You will lost money just to have a fetish. If you have the CD, enjoy it, even sounds better,
  • Burirus
Record was flat and quiet so that's nice. As far as the sound quality, it isn't a material improvement over the cd. It's disappointing considering that RTT and Crash were very well done. Unless you are just into holding 12" of vinyl in your hand, there really is no reason to get this as a record. I can say that I never listen to it. Just play the CD and it's the same experience.
  • Low_Skill_But_Happy_Deagle
So I think have a copy of this misprint and am wondering what number is your album? Were all these presses in error or just some of them? Did this come with the hype sticker and 180g like the following February 2015 release?
  • Maldarbaq
I have the mispress version and replacement LP. No. 12685. Copyright date, 1994, 2014. I believe the only real way to tell is if you open and play the record.
  • black coffe
The copyright date doesn't usually change. What number is yours and why would you suspect it is the misprint?
  • Welen
I'm in the same boat! I think I just came across this misprint album as well, but not 100% sure. The copyright date on the back does say 2014...Do the correct versions say 2015? Have you gathered any info since this initial post?
  • Juce
The verbiage that this was "from the original master tapes" is misleading. Ted Jensen did a 24/96 digital remaster from the original tapes, and that digital remaster was used for the vinyl. The problem is, Jensen, as is his custom, crushed the dynamics and applied a ton of dynamic range compression to his master, so this vinyl reissue is a victim of the loudness wars just like a poorly mastered CD or digital file. A high resolution source like 24/96 means absolutely nothing if the mastering is terrible, and that's the case here. The quieter songs (like Lover Lay Down and #34) sound decent, but the other songs the poor mastering is very noticeable. Compare this release with the remaster of their indie debut 'Remember Two Things' that came out previously. That one, despite being cut from a lower resolution source (16/44.1), was mastered incredibly well by Chris Bellman and sounds fantastic as a result.
  • Alsantrius
Just to clarify, RTT was mastered by David Glasser and cut by Bellman...it has never been "remastered"
  • Ielonere
Just recived my copy today, and i must say that there is a slight "hissing" on the vocals. But far from the worst i've heard on remastered albums from the 90's. I can live with that, since the mastering on the rest of the record is (maybe) the best i've heard on a vinyl remaster!!
  • WOGY
Totally enjoy the sound on this. Well worth the delay. Love the gatefold. I used a Shure M44-7 cartridge when I listened to it. Maybe type of needle matters? #00391
  • Talvinl
Listened to the Spotify (320kps) version and the '94 CD.....it's there in the remaster, but much less in the original 1994 release.I'm keeping mine and jussst trying to get over it
  • Negal
Carter's cymbals and dave's "Ssss" are too distorted. I have other releases from the same pressing plant/label/etc, and lots of people here are having the same issues.Listen closely to the last moment or two of "What Would you Ssssssay"....Been long time since I've had a brand new record have this much distortion and sibilance, especially on nearly every track
  • Bedy
FINALLY after 4 months...#4682....waaaaay too tinny, even spread across two LPs...way too much distortion, even with a vivid-line stylus! At least the packaging was flawless and the records were perfectly flat.
  • Mavegar
Email received yesterday - appears they will be mailing, free of charge to all pre-orders an LP with the correct version of Jimi Thing.
  • Thetalas
This version has the incorrect version of Jimi Thing with the sax solo outro missing.
  • Ranterl
I myself pre-ordered (thru Amazon) on Oct. 9th. The corrected version isn't coming out til February 3rd :(
  • Hono
Rumor has it, management failed and lied once again...Turns out the UTTAD LP & the Recently EP, once again were sourced from digital files by the idiot Ted Jensen; same with the Away From The World LP.How can they do this, it's been 20 years in the making and they master a vinyl worse than random independent companies for garage bands.
  • Saithi
from reddit:"A friend who is another hardcore DMB fan. He did some digging. He said the guy who pressed the initial release has a rep for doing it poorly, which is surprising to me that DMB used him. So my source isn't directly from the horse's mouth, but I wouldn't be surprised. UTTAD is still really DMB's signature record, so releasing it so poorly doesn't make sense. The new Recently 10in sounds fantastic, and you can tell it came from the source tapes. So I'm sure the opportunity to compare the two, with Recently being released, made the fact that UTTAD was bad even more evident."
  • Thetalune
worse though is that they CUT LeRoi's sax parts from JimiThing...really??
  • Zetadda
Did anyone get the 2014 reissue CD? I don't see it or the new vinyl listed on Discogs.
